Obverse description A centrally placed oak tree rendered in a naive, flat style rises from a mound in the field, displaying multiple branches with leaves extending laterally. The design is enclosed within an inner beaded circle, with the abbreviated colonial legend MASATHVSETS. IN: distributed around the periphery in crude Latin lettering characteristic of early American hammered coinage. The overall style reflects the rudimentary die-cutting techniques of the Boston mint in the mid-17th century.
