Pattern coinage of the early German Empire reflects the intense standardization effort following unification in 1871, when dozens of previously independent monetary systems had to be collapsed into a single federal currency. The 1873 Coinage Law established the Mark system, and the years immediately following saw extensive trial striking as the imperial mints worked through design and specification candidates before committing to production dies.
KM#Pn10 did not advance to circulation — the approved 2 Pfennig type proceeded in a different specification.
