Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse features the Imperial German eagle displayed, with wings spread and detailed feathering, surmounted by an imperial crown. The eagle bears on its breast a quartered shield with the Hohenzollern arms. The mint mark letter 'A' appears twice in the lower field, flanking the base of the eagle's tail feathers, denoting the Berlin Mint. The design is rendered in high relief with fine engraving consistent with a pattern strike.

Aanvullende informatie

This is a pattern piece from the early standardization push following German unification, when the new Reich was testing multiple compositions for its subsidiary coinage before settling on copper for the circulating 2 Pfennig type. Nickel was a serious candidate — it had practical advantages in durability and counterfeit resistance — but cost and minting behavior ultimately ruled it out. The copper version entered circulation the same year.
