Botswana's pula — meaning "rain" in Setswana — carries particular weight as a currency name in a country where rainfall is genuinely scarce and historically tied to prosperity. The Bank of Botswana has maintained one of the more stable currencies in sub-Saharan Africa, underpinned by diamond revenue that transformed the country from one of the world's poorest at independence in 1966 to an upper-middle-income economy within two generations.
The bimetallic construction was adopted for the 2 Pula as a straightforward anti-counterfeiting measure, a format widely introduced across African coinage in the 1990s and 2000s.
