Additional information

Paraguay's 1868 coinage patterns were struck in the dying months of the War of the Triple Alliance, as the López government attempted to project financial legitimacy while Brazilian, Argentine, and Uruguayan forces closed in on Asunción. The country had no functioning mint of its own; these patterns were almost certainly prepared abroad as proposed designs rather than production prototypes. The war ended with Paraguay losing roughly half its prewar population — the most catastrophic demographic collapse in 19th-century South American history.

The "Big Year" designation distinguishes this from concurrent 1868 pattern variants by the relative size of the date numerals in the die.
