The 2 Rufiyaa denomination was introduced as part of the Maldives Monetary Authority's 1987–1990 series, which marked a consolidation of the island nation's currency after decades of fragmented note production. Thomas De La Rue's involvement brought a consistency to the series that earlier Maldivian issues — some printed under less controlled conditions — had lacked.
Pick 15 is one of the shorter-lived denominations in the MMA catalogue, replaced relatively quickly as inflation eroded the practical utility of the 2 Rufiyaa face value.
