Reval — modern Tallinn — occupied an awkward position in 1569, nominally under Swedish suzerainty following the city's voluntary submission to Erik XIV in 1561, yet still operating its mint with considerable autonomy and striking coins in the name of Johan III, who had seized the Swedish throne from his brother Erik just the year before. The city's billon coinage of this period reflects that transitional instability: a new king, a mint trying to signal loyalty to the right faction, and a Baltic trade network that desperately needed small-denomination specie to function.
