Bolivia's silver coinage of the 1850s was struck at the Potosí mint — the same facility that had, under Spanish colonial rule, produced more silver than any other mint in the Western Hemisphere. By 1853, that output was a fraction of its colonial peak, but Potosí remained the only functioning mint in the country. The .667 fineness reflects a deliberate reduction from earlier standards, part of ongoing struggles to balance the cost of silver with the demands of circulating coinage in a cash-poor economy.
The KM#121 type spans six years and at least two assayer initial combinations, making die attribution worthwhile for serious collectors of the series.
