Pietro del Monte Santa Maria served as Grand Master from 1568 to 1572, a tenure defined largely by the Order's desperate effort to rebuild after the Great Siege of 1565, when Ottoman forces under Suleiman the Magnificent came within a hair of taking Malta entirely. Funds were chronically short; coinage from this period reflects a financially strained institution still dependent on European donations to remain operational.
The 2 Tari denomination in silver was the Order's principal transactional coin during the sixteenth century. Restelli 12 is not among the commoner die pairings from del Monte's issues.
