These were struck for the Philippines under American administration, following the Philippine Organic Act of 1902 which established a new currency system pegged to gold at exactly half the value of the U.S. dollar. The "large type" designation distinguishes this issue from the reduced-diameter 20 centavos introduced in 1907, when the Conant monetary reform prompted a wholesale redesign and downsizing of the coinage. The San Francisco Mint handled production for all years of this type.
