| Additional information |
The 1920 French 20 centimes pattern was among several silver essais produced by the Monnaie de Paris as France attempted to rationalize its coinage system in the aftermath of wartime monetary disruption. Circulating small change had effectively disappeared during the war years, hoarded or melted, and the government was under genuine pressure to reconstitute a functional coinage. This piece never advanced to circulation — the 20 centime denomination in silver was abandoned as inflationary pressures made the metal value impractical for the face amount.
