Thomas De La Rue has printed Gambian banknotes for decades, and this series continues that relationship without interruption. The Gambia's currency, the dalasi, replaced the pound in 1971 following decimalisation — a reform that predated independence from the sterling area by several years in practical terms, though the political break had come in 1965.
The cotton substrate and dual security features — watermark and embedded thread — represent the lower tier of De La Rue's available security specifications, appropriate for a denomination in active everyday circulation in a small West African economy.
