Zimbabwe's 2020 dollar is itself the product of an extraordinary monetary decision. The RTGS dollar — reintroduced in 2019 after the country had officially abandoned its currency in 2009 — was renamed the "Zimbabwe dollar" by statutory instrument, and this note followed as part of that reestablishment. It is a second attempt at a currency that collapsed spectacularly into hyperinflation, with the 2008 episode producing denominations that reached 100 trillion dollars before the whole system was abandoned.
Giesecke+Devrient's hybrid substrate here is the same polymer-paper composite used across several African issues of this period — more durable than pure cotton paper, cheaper than full polymer.
