| 表面の説明 | The obverse features a black enamelled field dominated by a large Christmas tree silhouette rendered as a cutout in the centre-left, allowing light to pass through the silver flan. To the upper right, the national coat of arms of Kiribati is depicted in relief, showing a frigate bird in flight above a rising sun over ocean waves, with the national motto TE MAURI TE RAOI AO TE TABOMOA inscribed on a scroll beneath the shield. The legend CHRISTMAS ISLAND arcs along the upper periphery, while KIRIBATI 2012 is inscribed in bold letters along the lower periphery. |

Kiribati has issued its own coinage since independence from Britain in 1979, but the islands have no functioning domestic coin market — virtually all collector issues are produced under contract by foreign mints and sold directly into the numismatic trade. This piece is one of them. The Christmas Island that gives Kiribati's most famous atoll its name was so designated by Captain Cook, who sighted it on December 24, 1777.
