Palau's first gold issue, released the year the republic struck its inaugural coinage series following independence from U.S. administration in 1994. The Marine Life Protection series, of which this piece is a part, was produced by the Austrian Mint under license — a common arrangement for small Pacific island nations with no minting infrastructure of their own.
