Othon — the Bavarian prince installed as Greece's first modern king in 1833 — never achieved a stable coinage system during his reign. This 1852 pattern was part of repeated, ultimately frustrated attempts to establish a functioning gold currency for the kingdom; Greece would not see a consistently circulating gold coinage until well after his forced abdication in 1862. Pattern strikes of this type were produced in extremely limited numbers for official approval, making survivors almost exclusively institutional or cabinet pieces.
KM#Pn19 is among the rarer Othon-era patterns documented by Krause.
