Swaziland's 1986 series marked the first major redesign of its banknotes since independence, with Thomas De La Rue producing the full set from their London works. The 20 Emalangeni sits at the top of the original circulating denominations before higher values were later added to accommodate inflation.

The B.S. Dlamini signature refers to Ben S. Dlamini, who served as Governor of the Central Bank during this period — one of the longer tenures in the institution's early history.
