Switzerland never joined the eurozone and has no plans to, but in the late 1990s and early 2000s the European Commission quietly encouraged non-member states to submit pattern strikes for the proposed common coinage — partly to test cross-border vending machine compatibility. This brass essai is one of those submissions, produced for technical evaluation rather than any realistic prospect of adoption. The Swiss franc remained untouched.
