Jordan's 1949 coinage was among the first issued under the newly declared Hashemite Kingdom, formalized just a year earlier when Abdullah I formally assumed the title of king following Transjordan's independence from British mandate administration in 1946. The fils denominations of this series were struck at the Royal Mint in London, as Jordan had no domestic minting capability.
The timing places this coin squarely in the immediate aftermath of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, during which Jordan occupied and subsequently annexed the West Bank — a political reality that shaped the kingdom's economy and currency needs for decades.
