Essai strikes for the Comoro Islands in this period were produced at the Paris Mint as trial pieces ahead of — or sometimes entirely independent of — any confirmed circulation issue. The 1964 20 Francs essai predates Comorian independence by over a decade, placing it squarely within the French Overseas Territory administration. Paris essais of this type were typically struck in very small quantities, often fewer than 100 pieces, distributed almost exclusively to government officials and collectors through the Monnaie de Paris.
