Menton is one of a long series of "Villes de France" collector issues produced by the Monnaie de Paris, struck in quantity for the gift and souvenir market rather than circulation. The town's long historical ambiguity — formally French only since 1860, when Napoleon III annexed it following a local plebiscite that ended Grimaldi suzerainty — gives it more genuine numismatic interest than most entries in the series.
