Guyana's Essequibo region has been claimed by Venezuela since at least 1840, when British surveyors drew a boundary line Caracas never accepted. The dispute intensified after significant oil deposits were confirmed offshore in 2015, and Venezuela formally reclassified the territory as its own on official maps shortly after. This coin was issued against that unresolved backdrop — the regional name in the title is itself a political statement.
