Lausa bei Losenstein is a small commune in Upper Austria, and this Heller note belongs to the wave of emergency municipal currency — Notgeld — that swept Austria during and immediately after the First World War. Central government coin shortages, driven by metal requisitioning and hoarding, forced even minor parishes to print their own fractional paper. Lausa's issue is among the more obscure examples, reflecting just how far down the administrative hierarchy the shortage reached.
