Imst is a market town in the Inn valley of Tyrol, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities it resorted to printing its own small-denomination emergency money during the severe coin shortage of the First World War and its immediate aftermath. These Notgeld issues filled a practical gap — metal had been requisitioned, and small change had effectively vanished from daily commerce.
Deutsche Buchdruckerei G.m.b.H. in Innsbruck handled a substantial volume of Tyrolean municipal Notgeld, which accounts for the family resemblance across many issues from the region.
