A piece of Austrian Notgeld, issued by the market town of Mondsee in Upper Austria during the acute small-change shortage that followed the First World War. Municipal authorities across Austria were authorized — or simply compelled by practical necessity — to print their own emergency fractional currency when coins disappeared from circulation entirely. Mondsee's issue is locally produced, both designer and engraver credited to a single hand: Reisenbichler, almost certainly a local craftsman rather than a professional printing house.
Countersigned by R. Kaltenbrunner, presumably the Bürgermeister or a designated municipal official at the time of issue.
