The Lega Autonomista Lombarda was one of several regionalist movements that fragmented and realigned during the early 1990s around the broader Lega Nord coalition. This piece dates to the same year the Maastricht Treaty was signed — an irony not lost on northern Italian separatists, who objected as much to deeper European federalism as they did to Rome.
The denomination itself, the "Lega," was a deliberate provocation: a phantom currency for a polity that did not exist, issued to assert an identity rather than facilitate exchange.
