San Marino struck virtually no gold coinage of its own during the early twentieth century, relying instead on the Latin Monetary Union framework and Italian-minted issues. This 1925 piece exists as a pattern — a prova — almost certainly never intended for circulation, produced at a moment when the tiny republic was reassessing its monetary arrangements with Italy. The timing coincides with the 1923–1924 renegotiation of the friendship treaty between San Marino and Mussolini's government, which redefined the terms under which Italian currency circulated within the enclave.
KM#Pr1 designation confirms it as the first catalogued pattern for the republic. Surviving examples are extraordinarily few.
