Banco Emissor do Norte was one of several regional banks granted note-issuing authority under Brazil's sweeping 1888–1890 banking reforms, which briefly decentralized emission away from the central government before the whole experiment collapsed in the speculative chaos of the Encilhamento. This note dates from that window — a period of intense monetary expansion that ended badly, with most of these regional institutions either dissolved or absorbed within a few years.
ABNC's New York presses handled a substantial volume of Brazilian provincial bank paper during this period. Attribution to a specific engraver within the firm is not established for this series.
