Additional information

The 1937 Mongolian coinage series was produced under the Mongolian People's Republic during a period of intense Soviet influence, with dies and likely production assistance coming from the USSR. That same year, Stalin's purges reached into Mongolia directly — the country's own "Stalinist repression" period, locally known as the Great Repression, resulted in the execution of tens of thousands of Mongolians, including nearly the entire Buddhist clergy. Coins struck this year circulated through a society being violently transformed.
