The Regency of Tripoli operated as an Ottoman tributary state under the Karamanli dynasty from 1711, though by the 1790s the relationship with Constantinople was largely nominal. Coins struck in Selim III's name circulated here under local authority that had effectively governed autonomously for decades — the sultan's tughra lending legitimacy to a regime that answered to him in theory only.
KM# 107 represents the second type within the Selim III series for Tripoli, distinguished from the first by die layout rather than any change in issuing authority or monetary policy.
