Banco Hipotecario del Pacífico was one of several regional mortgage banks chartered in Colombia during the brief window of relative monetary stability following the Thousand Days War (1899–1902), a conflict that had devastated the country's finances and left the peso in near-total collapse. By 1905, Bogotá was beginning to claw back some regulatory control over note issuance, which meant banks like this one had a narrow operating life ahead of them.
ABNC's involvement was typical for Colombian regional banks of the period — domestic printing capacity simply couldn't meet the security requirements creditors and depositors demanded after years of worthless wartime paper. The plates were made in New York regardless of where the issuing bank sat.
