Banco del Ecuador was a private commercial bank operating out of Guayaquil, not a central bank — Ecuador had no central monetary authority until the Banco Central del Ecuador was established in 1927. Several competing regional banks issued currency simultaneously during this period, and the Banco del Ecuador was among the most prominent, closely tied to the coastal export economy built on cacao.
