20 Pesos Antonio Maceo, Pattern

Cuba's 1977 pattern series was produced during a period of significant constitutional reorganization — the same year the country formally adopted its socialist constitution, replacing the provisional government structure in place since 1959. The Antonio Maceo 20 Pesos was struck as a trial piece and never advanced to general circulation, leaving surviving examples almost entirely in institutional or specialist hands.

Maceo himself died in 1896 at Punta Brava, ambushed during the War of Independence — a death so politically charged that Spanish authorities initially suppressed news of it to prevent a martyr effect.
