Austria's P#142 was part of a postwar rebuilding of the Nationalbank's note architecture that stretched from the 1950s into the late 1960s. By the time this 20 Schilling note entered circulation, the Schilling itself had been fully stable for over a decade following the 1953 currency consolidation — a marked contrast to its turbulent earlier history of hyperinflation, forced conversion, and wartime disruption.
Roman Hellmann contributed designs to several denominations in this series. The 20 Schilling was withdrawn relatively early compared to higher denominations of the same generation, limiting its circulation lifespan.
