Tajikistan declared independence on September 9, 1991, following the failed coup attempt against Gorbachev in Moscow just days earlier. The somoni itself wasn't introduced until 2000, replacing the Russian ruble intermediary at a rate that wiped out decades of Soviet-era savings. This commemorative was issued for the twentieth anniversary, part of a broader series the National Bank produced throughout the 2000s and early 2010s marking national milestones — output that was modest by regional standards and largely absorbed by domestic collectors rather than international markets.
