Opmerkingen

Estonia's 1919 200 Marka was issued under extraordinary pressure — the republic had declared independence only in February 1918, and by the time this note circulated, the country was fighting simultaneously against Bolshevik forces from the east and remnant German Baltic units from the west. The treasury was essentially building a monetary system from scratch while the borders of the state itself remained contested.

The marka was pegged nominally to the German mark, a legacy of the occupation period, though in practice the exchange held little meaning during active hostilities. Pick 16 belongs to the earliest stratum of Estonian paper money, printed under conditions where even securing reliable printing supplies was not guaranteed.
