The 2006 series represented Banco de Moçambique's most substantial security upgrade since independence-era notes gave way to post-civil-war issues in the 1990s. Thomas De La Rue's involvement brought the OVD strip — still relatively uncommon on sub-Saharan African notes at that point — into Mozambican circulation for the first time at this denomination level.
The 200 Meticais sits in the upper tier of the metical series introduced to replace the old currency at a 1,000:1 ratio in 2006, a redenomination driven by decades of accumulated inflation dating back to the destabilization conflicts of the 1980s.
