Issued in conjunction with the global Save the Children Fund campaign, this coin was struck the same year the Philippines was still absorbing the consequences of the July 1990 Luzon earthquake — a 7.8-magnitude disaster that killed over 1,600 people and left tens of thousands homeless, many of them children. The BSP's commemorative program in this period frequently aligned domestic issuance with international humanitarian themes, producing coins that saw almost no circulation.
