Costa Rica moved its higher denominations to polymer substrate starting in the mid-2010s, contracting Oberthur Fiduciaire as the note transitioned away from cotton paper. The 2018 date places this within the second generation of Costa Rican polymer issues, after the format had already proven itself in smaller denominations — the 2000 Colones being among the more heavily circulated values in daily commerce.
The transparent window integrated into the polymer substrate functions as both a security feature and a structural element of the design, a technique Oberthur had refined through contracts across multiple Latin American markets by this period.
