São Tomé and Príncipe has issued commemorative coins for foreign collectors since the 1970s, a revenue strategy common among small island nations with no realistic export economy for numismatic products. This particular piece belongs to a long series honoring discontinued European currencies in the years immediately before euro adoption — the Austrian Schilling and its subdivision the Groschen ceased legal tender status on 28 February 2002, making the 1999 issue date a deliberate lead-up to that transition.
The 50-Groschen coin it commemorates had itself been largely absent from Austrian circulation for decades before abolition, its purchasing power rendered negligible by postwar inflation.
