| 表面の説明 | The national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe occupies the central field, depicting two African grey parrots flanking a shield charged with a palm tree, surmounted by a black star above a ribbon bearing the national motto 'UNIDADE DISCIPLINA TRABALHO'. The arms are rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The legend 'REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE' curves along the upper periphery, with the date '1999' inscribed along the lower rim. |

São Tomé and Príncipe has issued foreign-themed collector coins since the 1990s as a straightforward hard-currency revenue strategy — the islands' domestic economy generating little numismatic demand of its own. This piece is part of a broader series commemorating Irish coinage, issued the same year Ireland was preparing to retire its punt in anticipation of euro adoption on 1 January 2002. The Irish 5 pence itself had roots in the 1969 decimalisation, which replaced the pre-decimal sixpence at an exact 1:1 conversion rate.
