The 2000 Kip denomination was introduced in 2003 as part of a broader effort to reduce the number of low-denomination notes required for everyday transactions — a persistent problem in Laos, where inflation had badly eroded purchasing power through the 1990s. Giesecke & Devrient's Leipzig facility has supplied the majority of Lao banknote production since the PDR's early currency series, making this a continuation of a long printing relationship rather than any exceptional commission.
The security package — watermark and thread only — is modest even by regional standards of the period.
