| Reverse description | The upper portion of the hexagonal field displays the coat of arms of Malawi, featuring a shield supported by two lions rampant, surmounted by a rising sun and an eagle, with the motto ribbon 'UNITY AND FREEDOM' at the base. Below the arms, a large African fish eagle is depicted in dynamic flight, wings fully extended, descending toward a waterline rendered in fine relief. The date '2024' is inscribed in the lower field beneath the eagle. The word 'MALAWI' appears incused in large letters across the background field, visible behind the central devices. |

Likoma Island sits within Lake Malawi, entirely surrounded by Mozambican waters — a quirk of colonial boundary-drawing that left a landlocked Malawian enclave inside a foreign nation's territorial lake. The island's anomalous status traces to Anglican missionary activity in the late 19th century; the Universities' Mission to Central Africa established a presence there in 1885, and British negotiators effectively drew the border around it during the 1891 Anglo-Portuguese Agreement.
The 2000 Kwacha face value is purely nominal — Malawi's actual circulating 2000 Kwacha note is worth a fraction of this coin's melt or collector value, a gap that reflects the kwacha's sustained depreciation over the past decade.
