Likoma Island sits within Lake Malawi, entirely surrounded by Mozambican waters — a quirk of colonial boundary-drawing that left a landlocked Malawian enclave inside a foreign nation's territorial lake. The island's anomalous status traces to Anglican missionary activity in the late 19th century; the Universities' Mission to Central Africa established a presence there in 1885, and British negotiators effectively drew the border around it during the 1891 Anglo-Portuguese Agreement.
