| Obverse description | Central device consisting of the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles — surmounted by a royal crown. Five small crosses appear in the angles between the shield and the surrounding legend. The circular legend reads IOSEPHUS.I DG.PORT.REX, identifying the issuer as José I, by the Grace of God King of Portugal, with the denomination 2000 flanking the lower portion of the shield. The entire design is enclosed within a milled border. |
