Obverse description Left-facing effigy of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish explorer and conquistador, rendered in profile relief. The legend REPUBLICA DE PANAMA arcs along the upper periphery, with the motto DIOS LEY LIBERTAD also present in the field. The date 1904 appears in the lower exergue. The portrait is rendered in a classical engraving style appropriate to early twentieth-century Latin American coinage.
