Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of King Joseph I of Portugal facing right, rendered in high relief in the Baroque style. The legend JOSEPHUS · I · D · G · PORT · ET · ALG · REX encircles the effigy along the periphery. The mint mark R (Rio de Janeiro) appears in the lower field below the truncation, flanked by the date 1771. A rectangular or oval countermark indent is applied to the right side of the coin, applied by the colonial authorities of Demerara and Essequibo to authorize circulation at the revalued denomination.

Reverse description The Portuguese royal arms displayed on an ornate shield, featuring the traditional quintas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants, surrounded by a bordure of castles, all surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown. The shield is supported by elaborate Baroque scrollwork and foliate mantling on either side. The entire device occupies the central field of the coin, which is the reverse of the original Portuguese host coin countermarked for use in Demerara and Essequibo. No legend or inscription appears on this face.
