| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of King Joseph I of Portugal facing right, rendered in high relief in the Baroque style. The legend JOSEPHUS · I · D · G · PORT · ET · ALG · REX encircles the effigy along the periphery. The mint mark R (Rio de Janeiro) appears in the lower field below the truncation, flanked by the date 1771. A rectangular or oval countermark indent is applied to the right side of the coin, applied by the colonial authorities of Demerara and Essequibo to authorize circulation at the revalued denomination. |
