Camp Knox was an Icelandic internment and labor camp for German nationals and other Axis-aligned civilians, operated under Allied administration during the occupation of Iceland. The "Aurar" denomination roots this note firmly in the Icelandic monetary unit — 100 aurar to the króna — suggesting the scrip was calibrated to local pricing rather than a foreign currency system imposed wholesale from outside.
Ship Service scrip of this type was issued to restrict purchasing power to controlled canteen or camp-store environments, preventing detainees or restricted personnel from acquiring Icelandic currency proper. S&B #1052 is sparsely documented, and surviving examples are uncommon.
