Jamul Indian Village, a Kumeyaay band in San Diego County, issues these tokens under the authority granted to federally recognized tribes to produce their own coinage — a right that has generated legal friction with the U.S. Mint on multiple occasions since the 1990s. Most tribal issues of this type circulate exclusively within casino properties and hold no legal tender status outside them.
